After a quick night of sleep following the GMLOS/KM triangular, the PEM wrestlers boarded the bus early and journeyed north to Inver Grove Heights to take on 3 of the best programs in MN and WI. Starting with Simley HS who has been either the MN state champion or runner-up for the past 11 seasons, continuing with Albert Lea who is currently ranked #4 in the state in class AAA, and finishing with #2 ranked and defending WI State Champion, Ellsworth Panthers.
In the first dual of the morning, the Bulldogs were able to win 4 individual matches against the Simley Spartans (currently ranked #39 nationally). Picking up victories for the Bulldogs were 106 Kael Lamb, 170 Austin Rother, 182 Dustin Dittrich, and 195 Riley Wingert. In the 170 lb match, Austin Rother needed a last second reversal to take his match to overtime, then needed a wild defensive scramble to avoid giving up the takedown in overtime. Then in the 2nd overtime Rother was able to get 3 nearfall points which proved to be the difference in the 3OT victory.
In the second dual, the Bulldogs fell just short of the upset victory over Albert Lea getting 6 match victories all by pin. Getting pins for the Bulldogs were Nick Miller(113), Carter Marx(152), Austin Rother(182), Dustin Dittrich(195), Riley Wingert(220), and Logan Wingert (285).
In the final dual of the day, the Bulldogs were able to win 5 matches against the defending Wisconsin state champion Ellsworth Panthers. Picking up wins for the Bulldogs were: 113 Nick Miller, 152 Carter Marx, 182 Austin Rother, 195 Dustin Dittrich, and 220 Riley Wingert.
Coach’s Comments: “I was very proud of the way we competed this weekend against 4 of the best programs in the midwest. We still have many technical things we can fix yet this season, that were exposed by wrestling against the best competition available.”
