Drew Rahman Wins Takedown on 22 Title! Graner and Ford Earn Finals!
"Go West Young Man", is a quote from Horace Greeley in the New York Times many years ago.
The PEM wrestling team followed this idea this past weekend as they headed to western Minnesota for the Takedown on 22 Tournament at Maple River High School. 14 teams from Minnesota and as far as Michigan met in the area's newest high school that covered 3 gymnasiums and saw top ranked teams, wrestlers and even multiple state champions compete for the chance to earn a top spot on the podium.
The Bulldogs didn't back down or disappoint as they were a part of a tournament with 4 state ranked teams and Jackson County Central (JCC) who is the 2 time defending champion in Minnesota for 2022 and 2023. As the last match wrapped up for the day, the young Dawgs found themselves just missing 3rd place by one point but ahead of perennial power, JCC.
PEM coach Nate Pfeilsticker commented, "You don't see many tournaments with this caliber of competition in early February. Many teams are wrapping up their regular season or are finding softer competition. Our guys stepped right into the fire with #6 ranked New Prague, #13 ranked Watertown-Mayer, and #15 ranked Owatonna. We were right there with the best!"
Aiden Graner and Nolan Ford battled all the way to the finals in their brackets by pulling off some upsets and wrestling at a very high level. Both lost close matches in the finals but neither disappointed.
Added coach Daren Wingert., "Aiden and Nolan Ford had to beat some tough guys to get to the finals. Aiden's semi-finals match win over a returning state entrant helped him show us where he's at. He had to show another gear to win that one and he really dominated!"
But Drew Rahman at Hwt stole the show for PEM as he stormed through the tournament in impressive fashion. Drew pinned all 3 opponents in route to another top finish and a gold medal for his performance. Coach Cam Miller summarized the day, "Drew has really stepped up his game to a new level! Many fans stuck around just to see him and the GMLOS Hwt battle it out in the finals. Drew did not disappoint even after a controversial officials call in the first. He just gathered himself and proceeded to earn the fall early in the 2nd period!"
PEM will now finish off the regular season with a home match on Thursday night vs Dover-Eyota and GMLOS. The evening will honor PEM teachers who are nominated by the Bulldog wrestlers as well as an appearance by PEM wrestling alumni who will be recognized for their contributions to the program the past 60+ years. Fans should brush up on their PEM wrestling trivia as prizes will be awarded for correct answers announced throughout the night.
