PEM Youth Wrestling Raises over $4,000 for Down Syndrome Awareness

On Monday, February 20th, the PEM Wrestling Program hosted their annual Youth Wrestling Night Extravaganza. This year the youth team focused on the theme of “Wrestling for a Cause” to help raise awareness for down syndrome. The PEM K-6 youth program was joined by about 160 youth wrestlers from Lake City, Saint Charles, Wabasha Kellogg, Mayo, and John Marshall.

Wrestlers in grades PreK to 6th grade scrimmaged each other while wearing brightly colored mismatched socks to show their support for people/families with down syndrome. Before wrestling began, Coach Matiash delivered a message to the wrestlers about the privilege of being involved in athletics and the need for all athletes to give back to the community and support all others regardless of differences. Jewels DeCorsey also spoke to the group about Down Syndrome Awareness Day (March 21st) and what the young wrestlers can do to help out. This free event took goodwill donations for The Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network.

Together the six wrestling programs raised over $4,000 for this great cause. PEM Youth Wrestling would like to thank the event sponsors: All Craft Exteriors, Texteijl Branding Apparel, and Two Scoops & a Bar Ice Cream. We would also like to thank the PEM Wrestling Booster Club and PEM schools for making this event possible.
