On the road again! Just like the song goes, the PEM wrestling squad loaded the bus and headed out of town for 2 big matches this past week. The grapplers headed to Mayo High School and LaCrescent to wrap up the regular season. The Dogs finished their week with a 2-1 record and hung on until the bitter end in Harmony as the JV finished a strong third in the annual Three Rivers Conference tournament.
The Bulldogs earned section wins over Byron and LaCrescent and learned a lot from a tough loss to the state ranked Spartans of Mayo. Coach Pfeilsticker commented, "it's always hard to know how the guys will respond to long road trips to places like LaCrescent, but they showed their GRIT by getting tough wins over the Bears and Lancers. We haven't beaten Byron in a few years and it's nice to see with our win over LaCrescent this young squad finished in 4th place in the 10 team Three Rivers conference race. The top 3 teams in the conference, Dover-Eyota, Caledonia and Chatfield are all ranked in the top 4 in the state. So we feel good about where we finished and the direction we are going!"
On Saturday PEM headed to Harmony for the 10 team TRC JV tournament. The tournament is individual but wrestlers earn team points with the right to become individual conference champs as well. In a wild jam packed gymnasium, the Bulldogs showed their stuff. The team standings see-sawed back and forth throughout the day. PEM had an amazing semi-final round with 9 guys getting to the championship match. In the end, Caledonia-Houston with their loaded upper weights pulled out the conference championship over PEM in the closing minutes. PEM coach Jeff Cargill added, "what a crazy day! I'm proud of the team effort and ALL the points earned by each wrestler. We knew it would be close with the tough wrestlers the D-E, Chatfield and Caledonia-Houston put out there."
Jack Nielsen and Easton King earned conference titles in dominant fashion with pins in their championship matches. Below is the list of PEM wrestlers and their finish on the day.
