On Saturday Jan. 4, the PEM wrestlers traveled to Montgomery, MN, to take part in the Tri-City United Invitational Tournament. This was the Bulldogs’ 2nd year attending the tournament, and this year’s field was considerably tougher than last season’s with the addition of #3 ranked Fairmont/Martin County West, as well as perennial AAA powerhouse Albert Lea. Most brackets had numerous state ranked competitors. Due to injuries, the Bulldogs were only able to field a competitor at 11 of the 14 weight classes, but still managed to place in the top half of the 10 team field.
Individual Highlights for the Bulldogs included:
113: Riley Boland (10), picked up his first ever varsity win in dramatic fashion with a 14-12 come-from-behind overtime victory, enroute to a 5th place finish.
120: Seventh grader Alex Hinrichs added another pin to his young career to score a top 4 finish.
132: Dominic Michel (9) placed in the top 6 and scored 6 points for the Bulldogs.
145: Kael Lamb (11) had a pin in the wrestle-backs to earn a place in the top 6.
152: Cael Marx (11) had a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Albert Lea’s Caleb Talemantes (currently ranked #3 AAA) in the semifinals to earn a top 2 finish in a bracket that had 4 state ranked individuals.
160: Dereck Boyum (11) had a fantastic day going 3-1 on the day with 2 pins and a dramatic comeback win in the 3rd place match in which he scored 6 points in the final :18 seconds.
170: Alex Rahman (11) had 2 wins in the wrestle-backs to propel him to a top 6 finish.
285: Senior Logan Wingert had two first period pins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds enroute to a runner-up finish.
