PEM Wrestlers outlast LARP

Last Thursday, the PEM grapplers traveled to Lewiston for a Three Rivers Conference dual meet with the Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson Screaming Eagles. The home team got over to a fast start winning the first 3 matches at 106, 113, and 120 to take an early 11-0 lead over the Bulldogs. At 126, freshman Cael Marx got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a pin against his LARP opponent closing the gap to 11-6.

Then at 132, fellow freshman Cooper Hofschulte provided a dramatic come from behind win. Down 7-6 in the final period, Hofschulte used a granby roll to score a 2 point reversal and earn 3 nearfall points and an 11-7 decision victory, pulling the team score to 11-9. LARP would stretch their lead back to 8 with a technical fall victory at 138. At 145, in a battle of 20 win wrestlers, PEM’s Joe Stucky would use 3 takedowns and 2 different sets of nearfall points to finish with an 11-6 victory and inch the Bulldogs back within striking distance on the scoreboard at 16-11.

Next up at 152 was junior Carter Marx who used a hip-toss to score a quick 1st period pin and give the Bulldogs their first lead of the evening at 17-16. It would, however, be temporary as the Screaming Eagles would rebound with 2 pins to again lead the dual by 11 at 28-17. With four weights remaining in the dual, senior Austin Rother began the Bulldog comeback with a 9-5 win at 182 to bring the Bulldogs within 8 at 28-20.

Junior Dustin Dittrich then followed at 195 with a forfeit victory to close the gap to 28-26. Sophomore Riley Wingert needed just :31 to get a first period pin and put the Bulldogs in front by 4 at 220. Going into the final match with just a 4 point Bulldog lead, the dual meet was still either team’s for the taking. Sophomore Logan Wingert wasted no time clinching the dual for the Bulldogs, getting two takedowns and pinning his opponent in only :38.

Coach’s Comments: “LARP was definitely ready to compete this evening and we were up to the challenge. We did a nice job of continuing to compete in every match. We need to continue to analyze areas that we can still improve as we get closer to the postseason.”
