On Thursday Dec. 20, the Bulldog wrestlers traveled to LaCrescent to take on the Lancers in their first dual meet of the season. It was an exciting atmosphere with LaCrescent having their alumni night and unveiling a brand new mat, along with legendary SE MN referee Rod Hosely officiating the final dual meet of his career.
Making use of the new MSHSL rule for this season, LaCrescent would opt to only wrestle 12 weight classes and begin the dual meet at 113. However, the beginning would be anti-climatic as the dual would start with a double forfeit at 113. At 120, PEM freshman Jason Feils would contribute an amazing effort for the Bulldogs. In just his first ever varsity match, Feils would contain LaCrescent’s best wrestler, Bryce Duffy to a humble 6-2 decision. Following at 126, Garrett Olson would give up the first takedown to finish the period down 2-0, but then would rally in the 2nd and 3rd period to gain a 6-3 victory and tie the dual up at 3-3.
At 132, Cooper Hofschulte took only 1:38 to get the pin over LaCrescent’s Dominic Foster to put PEM ahead in the dual by a score of 9-3. LaCrescent would forfeit to Cael Marx giving the Bulldogs 6 more points and a 15-3 lead. In the next two weight classes, LaCrescent would rally with a decision and a pin to close the gap to PEM 15 LaC12. But PEM would have a reply of their own with senior Carter Marx and sophomore Alex Rahman each picking up a pin of their own at 160 and 170, stretching the PEM lead back to 27-12.
LaCrescent seniors Colton and Clayton Jorgenson would pick up two victories at 182 and 220 to close the gap slightly. But HWT Logan Wingert would close the door for the Bulldogs picking up his 14th win of the season, this time by forfeit to give PEM a 33-20 conference victory.
Coach’s comments: “This was a very fun and exciting night for wrestling. The atmosphere was outstanding, and I was very pleased with the way our wrestlers responded on the mat. Many matches was closely contested and our level of conditioning was impressive.”
