PEM’s 2016-17 dual meet season came to an end last Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped a close meet to #6 state ranked Albert Lea Area. The Bulldogs wrestled very well in the loss and won 6 of the 14 individual matches. Out of the 8 losses, 6 of them were to state ranked opponents and only 1 of them was by fall. Highlights for the Bulldogs included seniors Reed DeFrang and Frank Wingert, both earned falls over 20+ win wrestlers in the final dual meet of their career. Likewise, senior Jacob Clark, earned a hard fought, 2-0 victory to cut the AL lead to 1 point going into the final match. At 170, Austin Rother came from behind to earn an 11-7 victory and nearly get the fall. At 195, freshman Riley Wingert wrestled a very smart match, earning a 7-2 victory and keeping PEM within striking distance. And in a losing effort at 285, PEM freshman Logan Wingert pushed #6 ranked senior Matt Palmer to the absolute limit in a 6-4 defeat.
According to Coach Marx, “it’s always difficult to lose the final dual meet of the season, especially when victory was so close. I’m extremely proud of how far all of the wrestlers in our line-up have come in terms of their ability to go toe to toe with some of the very best wrestlers in the state.” The Bulldogs concluded the dual meet season with a 15-3 season record. While the dual meets are over, the Bulldogs’ starting 14 will compete in the Individual Section 1AA Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center in an attempt to qualify for the 2017 MN State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center March 3-4.
