PEM vs. Cannon Falls
On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Bulldog wrestlers traveled north to the annual Cannon Falls Duals. In the first dual of the day, the Bulldogs squared off against the host school and Section 1AA rival Cannon Falls Bombers. Garrett Olson got the Bulldogs started with a technical fall victory at 106 giving PEM the early 5-0 lead. The Bombers would recover with a pin at 113 to take a 6-5 dual meet lead. It would be short lived though as Nick Miller would swing the lead back to the Bulldogs with a major decision at 120 which was the start of a 4 match PEM run.
At 126, Cael Marx would follow up with a 2nd period fall. Cooper Hofschulte followed kept the PEM momentum rolling with a major decision victory at 132. At 138, Joe Stucky capped off the run with a 1st period pin putting the Bulldogs up in the meet 25-6. At 145, the Bombers would get back on the board with a tech fall victory, but the Bulldogs would answer with a 1st period fall by Carter Marx at 152 stretching the PEM lead back to 20 at 31-11.
The Bombers weren’t finished yet as they would pick up the next two weight classes with a pin and a major decision closing the Bulldog lead back to 10. But that was as close as it would get with Dustin Dittrich needing only :24 seconds to pin his CF opponent, stretching the PEM lead back to 16. In the last 3 weight classes the Bulldogs and Bombers would trade forfeits with the Bulldogs picking up forfeit wins at 195 and 285 for the 49-27 victory.
PEM vs. Hastings In the second round of the day, the Bulldogs were pitted against the AAA powerhouse program Hastings Raiders. Hastings would go on to win the dual, but it was not without plenty of PEM highlights. Starting at 106, Garrett Olson continued his winning ways with a 1st period pin. At 126, Cael Marx posted a 12-1 major decision over his Hastings opponent. Freshman Cooper Hofschulte didn’t get the win at 132, but battled well against Hastings senior and returning State Tournament entrant Jesse Mimbach, holding the match to a 14-9 decision. Juniors Carter Marx and Dustin Dittrich also provided two of the most exciting matches of the season vs. Hastings at 152 and 182.
Starting at 152, Marx found himself in a 0-0 match going into the 2nd period vs Section 3AAA favorite Corbin Leflay. After a Leflay escape to start the 2nd period, Marx found himself down 1-0. Using nearly the entire last minute of the 2nd period battling on the feet with no takedowns, Leflay used a double overhook throw in the closing seconds of the 2nd to plant Marx on his back for a 5 point throw to take a 6-0 lead into the 3rd period. Marx chose the down position to start the 3rd period and things went from bad to worse as Leflay used a double leg ride to dominate in the top position. After a stalemate led to a restart, Marx was finally able to get to his feet and score the escape to cut the lead to 6-1 with about :45 seconds left in the match. Unable to create any offense with leg attacks, with only :15 seconds left in the match, Marx switched to an upper body attack and stepped in for a hip-toss, launching Leflay to his back for a takedown and holding him there for a 3 point nearfall count to tie the match at 6-6 and force an overtime period. In the first 1 minute overtime neither wrestler got very close to scoring the takedown required to win the match via sudden death. In the 2nd overtime period, Leflay chose down and was able to escape quickly taking a 7-6 lead, but with 10 seconds left in the period Marx again hip tossed Leflay for 5 more points to take a 11-7 lead into the 3rd OT period. In the 3rd OT, Leflay let Marx go in an attempt to score another 5 point throw, but was unsuccessful as Marx would go on to prevail by a score of 12-8.
Not to be outdone, Dustin Dittrich provided his own fireworks of his own at 182 as he faced off against #4 ranked AAA opponent TJ Pottinger. In the first period, Pottinger flexed his neutral position muscle scoring the first takedown of the match but Dittrich was able to gain a reversal tying the match at 2-2 going into the second period. In the 2nd period, Pottinger chose down and scored a quick escape to take a 3-2 lead in the match. After a few scrambles in the neutral position, Pottinger again was able to get in deep on Dittrich’s right leg. Dittrich countered with a neck wrench hip toss, planting Pottinger flat to his back, pinning the highly ranked Pottinger.
PEM vs. Stewartville
In the final dual of the day, the Bulldogs had their work cut out for them against another Section 1 AA opponent in the Stewartville Tigers. With 2 wrestlers out due to injury, the Bulldogs knew they would be in for a challenge against the always tough Tigers. Leading off yet again for the Bulldogs, Garrett Olson notched his 5th bonus point victory in a row, scoring another 1st period pin to give PEM an early 6-0 lead. The lead was short lived as Stewartville would gain a forfeit victory at 113, followed by a technical fall victory at 120, followed by a pin at 126, followed by a forfeit at 132.
Going into 138, Stewartville held a commanding 23-6 lead. But with their backs against the wall the Bulldogs were far from finished. Starting at 138, Cooper Hofschulte drew a forfeit victory to double the PEM score column closing the gap to 23-12. At 145, Joe Stucky used a barrage of takedowns to score a 22-6 technical fall closing the gap further in the meet to 23-17. Carter Marx would follow suit with another technical fall at 152, bringing the Bulldogs within 1 at 23-22.
At 160, Connor Jones found himself down 2-0 in the 2nd period, but hit a homerun on the edge of the mat when he swung for a well timed headlock. With his opponent all the way out of bounds, Jones was barely able to keep his heels in bounds and tighten up the headlock and score the pin. Jones’ pin gave the Bulldogs their first lead since 106 at 28-23. At 170, Alex Rahman found himself tied 2-2 with the clock winding down in the 3rd period. As the seconds were closing down, Rahman was able to get to his feet, draw a stalling call and get the escape to notch the 4-2 victory stretching the Bulldogs lead to 31-23.
At 182, senior Austin Rother picked up a 2nd period pin, providing a bit more cushion on the scoreboard at 37-23. At 195, Dustin Dittrich put the meet out of reach with another 2nd period fall. After forfeiting to Stewartville at 220, the Bulldogs’ Logan Wingert finished the meet with a dominating 1st period pin.
Coaches Comments: “It was very exciting to see how our team rebounded and picked each other up today. After dropping 4 of the 1st 5 matches in the Stewartville dual, it was impressive to come back and win 8 of the last 9. In at least 4 of the matches, we found ourselves down on the scoreboard, but found ways to come back and get the victory.”
