Logan Wingert Paces Bulldogs with top 3 finish!
On the final weekend before the Holiday Break, the PEM wrestlers traveled to the RCTC Regional Sports Center. Historically speaking, the Christmas Tournament is the toughest individual high school wrestling tournament held in Minnesota, and this year’s tournament was no exception. This year’s field featured 41 teams from MN, IA, WI, IL, and OK, including 26 teams that have been ranked as a top team by their state association. The Bulldogs finished the two-day event in 26th place with four individuals surviving into the 2nd day of competition and one individual place-winner.
Individual highlights for the Bulldogs included: seventh grade wrestler Alex Hinrichs picking up the first 2 wins of his varsity career at 120 and battling to the 2nd day of competition. After dropping his first round match, Alex rebounded in the wrestle-backs with :39 second pin over Kevin Dang of Eagan for the 1st varsity win of his career. Then earned career win number two by injury default in the next round.
At 126, sophomore Austen Michel notched his first ever Christmas tournament win in the opening round with a first period pin. Cooper Hofschulte also had a very good tournament at 138, winning two matches on Friday night, one by pin and one by major decision, to advance into Saturday’s competition.
At 145, Kael Lamb also won two very tight wrestle-back matches on Friday night including a 9-4 sudden victory overtime thriller over Cole Decker of Forest Lake, followed up by a 3-1 victory over Noah Kipp of Eagan. Joe Stucky also won a couple big matches for the Bulldogs at 152. After a first round pin, Stucky lost to #7 ranked Max Scheffler of New Prague, but then rallied in the final round of competition on Friday night to defeat Section 1 AA rival Travis Dohmen of top-ranked Simley 5-0. At 182, Alex Rahman also picked up a pin on Friday versus his opponent from #7 ranked Owatonna.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior heavyweight Logan Wingert. After receiving a first round bye, Wingert needed just under a minute and a half to pin previously undefeated Marik Dickson of Dubuque, IA in the round of 16. In Saturday morning’s quarterfinal round, Wingert kept the momentum rolling against Anoka’s Tyler Nebelung who entered the match with a 12-1 record. Again Wingert recorded the pin as time was expiring in the first period. In the semifinals, Wingert ran into a buzzsaw in eventual tournament champion Gavin Layton of Coon Rapids, dropping a 5-0 decision. Wingert didn’t have much time before he was back on the mat again only 45 minutes later, this time in the consolation semifinals versus New Prague’s Evan Anderson, whom he had faced only a week before in a dual meet. Once again the result was the same with Wingert posting a first period pin and advancing to the 3rd place match. With the win, Wingert also recorded the 100th varsity win of his career.
Wingert becomes the 30th wrestler in PEM history and only the 3rd heavyweight in PEM history to join the 100 win club. In Wingert’s final match of the tournament he was once again pitted against Anoka’s Nebelung. And despite Nebelung’s 15-2 record, Wingert again needed just over a minute to score a takedown and a turn and finish the match.
