On Saturday Dec. 9, the PEM wrestlers traveled to Eau Claire North HS to compete in the 2017 Husky Invite that featured 38 state ranked wrestlers from 21 teams, including the 2017 WI State Champions, Ellsworth. It was a long day of action with wrestling starting at 10:00 am and wrapping up shortly before 8:00 pm. The Bulldogs could not keep pace with the eventual champion Ellsworth, but did outpace the other 19 teams at the tournament. Major highlights of the day for the Bulldogs included: 8 wrestlers finishing in the top 3 of their bracket (1st: 2, 2nd: 4, 3rd: 2), all 16 wrestlers getting at least 1 win, and many victories over state ranked opponents. Individual weight class highlights included:
106-PEM freshman Carter Meyers earned two more victories in only his 2nd ever varsity tournament.
113-Freshman Garrett Olson defeated the #6 ranked wrestler in WI in the semifinals on his way to a 2nd place finish. Also competing as a non-scorer in the weight class was PEM freshman Kael Lamb. Lamb earned the first two wins of his varsity career in his first ever varsity action including a win by defensive fall over the #5 ranked wrestler in WI and a pin in his 7th place match.
120-Nick Miller (11) made the tournament finals for the 3rd straight year with a win over the #3 ranked wrestler in WI in the semifinals before losing a narrow 10-9 defeat to the top ranked 120 pound wrestler in WI. Also competing at 120 as a non-scorer was freshman Jaden Wolf. Wolf won the first 2 matches of his varsity career enroute to a top 10 finish.
126-Freshman Cael Marx qualified for the finals for the 2nd year in a row defeating the #6 ranked wrestler in WI in the quarterfinals and a 2X MN state tournament qualifier in the semifinals.
132-Freshman Cooper Hofschulte picked up two more pins to raise his record to 6-4.
145-Sophomore Joe Stucky lost to the eventual tournament champion in the semifinals but battled back to defeat the #10 ranked wrestler in WI in the 3rd place match.
152-New PEM wrestler, sophomore Luke Martinson earned his first ever varsity win.
160-Junior, Carter Marx dropped a 6-3 decision to the WI state finalist in the semifinals but posted 2 pins in the first 2 rounds and won the 3rd place match by injury default. Also competing at 160, freshman Alex Rahman got his first pin on varsity for his 2nd career win.
170-Junior, Connor Jones came back from 4 points down to win his 1st round match 16-15, and also earned a fall in the 7th place match.
182-Junior Dustin Dittrich cruised through the tournament with a win by fall in the semifinals over a state ranked opponent and an 8-2 victory over the #6 ranked wrestler in the finals.
195-Senior, Austin Rother defeated the #7 ranked wrestler in WI in a semifinal match that included a very controversial scramble that took almost 20 minutes for a conference of officials to sort out. In the finals Rother faced the top ranked 195 pound wrestler in WI. Down 2-0 in the 3rd period, Rother threw his opponent to his back to record the win, earn a tournament championship, and remain undefeated on the season at 9-0.
220-Riley Wingert pinned his way into the finals and nearly had a tech fall in the finals until it was determined he was actually wrestling the wrong Superior, WI opponent. In his second finals match in only a few minutes, Wingert was unable to outlast his 2nd opponent, but still finished 2nd as only a sophomore.
285-Sophomore Logan Wingert won 2 matches by fall on his way to a top 5 finish.
