PEM vs. STA
Last Thursday, the wrestling post-season began for the Bulldogs in a modified fashion due to Covid-19 restrictions.
PEM entered Section quarterfinal competition as the #5 seed facing 4th seeded St. Thomas Academy. In late January the Bulldogs dropped a dual with the Cadets that was tied 37-37, but St. Thomas won on tie-breaker criteria. On Thursday, the Bulldogs would need an increase in bonus points to keep pace and flip the results of the previous dual.
At 106, Isaac Walch gave the Bulldogs a shot of momentum early scoring a first period pin versus the opponent that he beat only 4-2 in the previous dual. But in the next weight class, the Cadets answered back quickly with a pin of their own to tie the dual at 6-6.
The next match at 120 further improved the Bulldogs’ chances of reversing the team result. In the previous match-up, the Bulldogs forfeited to STA’s Josiah Solliday, but on this night, the Bulldogs sent 110 pound 7th grader Nolan Ford out on the mat in the hopes of shaving a few team points. In the first period Ford found himself down 2-0 early after giving up the first takedown, but Ford received a penalty point for clasping and then scored an escape to tie the match at 2-2 after the first period. In the 2nd period Solliday chose the down position and almost escaped, but Ford was able to bring him back down to the mat and get an arm-bar secured. After a short battle, Ford had the bar turned and nearly earned the pin before Solliday recovered and got off his back. Nevertheless, Ford collected 3 nearfall points to take a 5-2 lead in the match. But Ford wasn’t satisfied and seconds later hooked up another arm-bar on the same arm. This time the combination was tighter and it sealed Ford’s first pin of his young career.
The pin would give the Bulldogs a 12-6 lead in the dual, but STA would charge right back with a forfeit at 126 and a pin at 132 to take the lead back at 18-12. Senior Cooper Hofschulte would even the score at 18-18 at 138 with a first period fall. But at 145 the Cadets would take the lead back again with a pin by state-ranked Jacob Draxler. At 152, the Bulldogs would look to get the momentum back again, with Garrett Olson earning a major decision that pulled PEM back within striking distance at 22-24. Then at 160 and 170 the Kael Lamb/Cael Marx combo each earned pins to give the Bulldogs the first double digit lead of the night 34-24. Dereck Boyum followed up at 182 with a major decision victory to give the Bulldogs a little more breathing room heading into the final 3 weight classes.
But the Cadets were not done yet and a pin at 195 closed the gap back to 38-30 going into the final 2 matches. A pin and a decision in the final 2 weight classes would give STA another 1 point victory over the Bulldogs. But first the Cadets had to get through junior Martin Prieto at 220. Though undersized, weighing in at 195, Prieto pushed the pace of the match in the neutral position and scored a first period takedown to take an early lead in the match. But Prieto was not content to sit on the early lead and kept the pressure on leading to a 10-5 decision victory that clinched the win for the Bulldogs. The Cadets would get a pin at 285 but the Bulldogs would hang on to win the dual.
