On Thursday Jan 16, the Bulldog Wrestlers traveled to Lanesboro High School to battle with the Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) Wolves and the St. Charles Saints.
In the first dual of the evening, sophomore Isaac Walch got the Bulldogs started out right. Bumped up to 113 from his usual 106, Walch found himself in an early 2-0 hole, but got a turn in the 2nd period to briefly take a 3-2 lead, but as the turn slipped out, Walch was reversed and found himself down 4-3 heading into the 3rd period. Walch chose the top position going into the 3rd and made the most of it, securing an arm-bar to put the heavier opponent on his back. Only this time it would be for good as Walch would get the pin and put the Bulldogs ahead on the scoreboard 6-0.
Next at 120, 7th grader Alex Hinrichs found himself down 6-0 in the 3rd period against his senior opponent from FCLMC. But the underclassman battled for a reversal to close the gap to 6-2, then was able to hook up a pinning combination good for 3 nearfall points. But the comeback bid would fall just short as the match would end with a narrow 6-5 loss, and FCLMC would close the team score to 6-3.
At 126, Garrett Olson would only need :55 seconds to add 6 more points to the Bulldogs’ score column getting a quick takedown and pin to stretch the PEM lead to 12-3. The Wolves would get some of it back with a major decision at 132, but it would be the last wrestled match the Wolves would take. At 138, Kael Lamb would give the Bulldogs another boost. After battling illness all week, Lamb dug deep to take a 10-4 lead into the 3rd period. Then in the 3rd Lamb hooked up a cradle to finish the match with an exclamation point. The pin would give the Bulldogs an 18-7 lead in the dual.
In the 145 lb match, Cael Marx had his hands full with the Wolves’ Caden Anderson. With the match tied at 3-3 with only :30 seconds left in the match, Marx would get a reversal and hold on for the 5-3 victory, inching the PEM lead a little more to 21-7. Both Joe Stucky and Dereck Boyum worked quickly and in dominating fashion at 152 and 160, needing only :53 and 1:22 respectively to clinch 1st period falls extending the Bulldogs lead to 33-7.
At 170, the Bulldogs were without a representative due to illness, and had to forfeit the weight class to the Wolves making the team score 33-13. Then at 182 in the match of the evening, sophomore Tony Roberton got the Bulldog fans back on their feet again. Clinging to a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd period, Roberton scored a reversal to extend his lead to 4-1. But as the period wound down, Roberton would surrender a reversal and the lead would again be just a point at 4-3. Knowing that he couldn’t give up any nearfall points, Roberton fought off multiple pinning combinations, but was warned twice for stalling and the score was tied at 4-4 at the end of regulation. But the drama wouldn’t last long, as Roberton would get the overtime takedown in just a few seconds and earn the sudden death 6-4 victory.
Martin Prieto would gain another 6 points for the Bulldogs via forfeit at 220, and senior heavyweight Logan Wingert would put the final stamp on the dual meet with another first period pin at heavyweight to give PEM the 35 point victory.
