PEM Defeats Defending Section 1A Champs Caledonia

Though it was only a 4 day school week, the PEM wrestling team put on some miles traveling to Caledonia for a dual and Hayfield for a triangular.

First up on Tuesday for the Bulldogs were the defending Section 1A champion Caledonia Warriors, currently ranked #12 in MN in Class A. Unfortunately neither team was at full strength, as the Bulldogs were missing 3 starters due to injuries, and the Warriors were missing a couple starters and their head coach due to the flu. Nevertheless, the wrestlers from both teams came to do battle with what they had. Due to missing wrestlers, 3 of the first 4 weight classes did not have a match. The Bulldogs collected forfeit points at 106 and 113, while the Warriors took forfeit points at 126 The match that did happen at 113 featured 2 upperclassmen as Bulldog junior Nick Miller was edged by Caledonia’s Trever Vick. At 132, #2 ranked Bulldog senior Reed DeFrang stretched the PEM lead to 9 picking up a pin over Isaac Densted of Caledonia. At 138, the Warriors countered with their own #2 ranked wrestler Kyle Cavanaugh, who scored a pin against Bulldog sophomore Lafe Aarsvold, closing the PEM lead back to 3. At 145, the Warriors sent #3 ranked Zach Schneider to wrestle Bulldog sophomore Carter Marx for his first match of the season. It did not last long, as an early scramble found Schneider on his back and unable to get off, giving the Bulldogs a 9 point lead once again. At 152 and 160 PEM surrendered 2 pins and Caledonia took their first lead of the night 27-24 with 5 matches remaining. At 170, junior Austin Rother evened the score at 27-27 when he edged Caledonia’s Spencer Stemper 10-7. At 182, Frank Wingert gave the Bulldogs the lead once again scoring a 1st period pin and putting the Bulldogs in the driver’s seat. At 195, in one of the best matches of the night, PEM’s Jacob Clark battled Austin Werner to the bitter end but was edged by a score of 3-2. With the PEM lead shaved to just 3 points, Bulldog freshman Riley Wingert hit the mat at 220 and clinched the meet for the Bulldogs, notching a :42 pin and giving PEM a 39-30 lead with only 285 remaining. In the final match of the evening PEM freshman Logan Wingert came up just short against Cal junior Brent Robley dropping the final bout 3-2.
