PEM Bulldogs tame LARP Screaming Eagles

PEM wrestlers took on Section 1AA and Three Rivers Conference rival Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson (LARP) in their final home event of the regular season. It was Senior Night, and the wrestling cheerleaders as well as senior wrestlers Jacob Clark, Reed DeFrang, Joe MIller, Grant Rubin, and Frank Wingert were honored and thanked for their years of service, dedication and commitment to the wrestling program. The actual wrestling started out in the Bulldogs favor with Cael Marx and Nick Miller picking up a pin and a decision at 106 and 113 giving the Bulldogs a 9-0 lead. LARP countered with a pin of their own at 120, closing the gap to 9-6. In perhaps the most anticipated match of the evening at 126, PEM freshman Joe Stucky battled back from a 4-1 deficit against LARP senior Xavier Riser to eventually take the lead and get the pin in the 3rd period. Stretching the Bulldog lead to 15-6. Senior Reed DeFrang continued his winning ways at 132, getting another pin to make the team score 21-6. From 138 to 160, LARP would trade victories back and forth with LARP winning a major decision at 138, closing the gap to 21-10. At 145, PEM’s Carter Marx answered with a first period pin making the team score 27-10, then at 152 LARP’s #1 ranked McCoy Tekautz replied with a pin of his own, once again closing the gap to 11 points at 27-16. 160 provided the second highly anticipated match of the evening featuring LARP senior Justin Mueller vs PEM’s surging sophomore Dustin Dittrich. Despite losing twice to Mueller last season, the result was different this time as Dittrich used great movement and conditioning to outwrestle Mueller to a 5-3 decision. At 170, in one of the most exciting matches of the evening PEM’s Austin Rother needed an extra period and an overtime takedown to secure the victory by a score of 10-8. Then at 182, PEM senior Frank Wingert only needed 7 seconds to pin his LARP opponent. At 195, Jacob Clark used two fast duck-unders to win a tough 5-1 decision. Riley Wingert picked up a forfeit at 220 to extend the Bulldog run to 21 unanswered points. In the final match of the evening at 285, LARP earned a fall making the final PEM 48 LARP 22. According to Coach Marx, “it was a great night, for the seniors to compete in their final home regular season event. I’m very proud of this class and what all of them have meant to our program.”
