On Saturday Dec. 3, the PEM varsity wrestling team competed in the 44th annual Dick Shiels Invitational, hosted by Fairibault High School. Due to injuries, the Bulldogs only had scoring wrestlers in 10 of the 14 weight classes. Despite being shorthanded, the wrestlers that competed picked up the slack, and they Bulldogs finished the day tied for 2nd place with 167 points behind only #4 ranked AAA school Owatonna. PEM came home with 2 individual championships, senior Reed DeFrang at 132 lbs and senior Frank Wingert at 182 lbs. The Bulldogs also had three other finalists in 8th grader Cael Marx at 106, junior Nick Miller at 113, and sophomore Dustin Dittrich at 160. Finishing in 3rd place for the Bulldogs were junior Austin Rother at 170, and freshman Riley Wingert at 195. Fourth place finishers included junior Ryan Liebenow at 220, and freshman Logan Wingert at 285. Rounding out the placewinners wrestling unattached at 113 was 8th grader Garrett Olson. Also competing for the Bulldogs at 145 was senior Grant Rubin. Coach Marx commented, “It was a very valuable day of wrestling in a very well run event. I was proud of the individual improvements that every wrestler made throughout the day.
