"The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of defeat!" is what the late Wide World of Sports announcer Jim McCay once said. The phrase ran throughout the Mayo Civic Center this past weekend. It ALL comes down to this! This is what wrestlers mark on their calendars in November as they prepare for the long, grueling season. Section wrestling is like no other sport in all of high school activities. The tension is high as wrestlers who have prepared themselves for many months of lifting and off-season wrestling put it all on the line to punch their ticket to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul next weekend. Throughout the Mayo's Civic Center and the halls surrounding one can feel and see the smiles and joy of winning and accomplishing their dreams, yet also see the tears of what it's like to come up short. There is nothing like it in all of high school sports.
PEM wrestlers Aiden Graner and Alex Bedsted showed their GRIT by upsetting state ranked wrestlers and winning their True Second matches along the way to add their names to PEM's wrestling elite!
Added Coach Nate Pfeilsticker, "these guys beat people they probably weren't supposed to defeat. Aiden bumped off the #9 ranked guy from Kasson-Mantorville and Alex beat the number 5 ranked kid from Waseca at 215. They didn't seem to care about rankings, they went out and got it done! Both guys either lost tough matches in the section finals for semi-finals but secured their opportunities and are going to the X"!
They will head to St. Paul next weekend with the momentum and goal of being a Minnesota All State wrestler. Individual action will start on Friday morning, with all the classes of wrestlers hoping to earn a spot on the podium.
PEM's Alex Hinrichs joined teammates Aiden Graner and Carson Rahman this season who all have now eclipsed the 100 career victory milestone! Hinrichs did it with a first round fall over Pine Island's Will Radtke. PEM fans celebrated in large numbers as many waved their "100" wins sign in celebration of getting to the century mark.
Added Coach Daren Wingert, "How many teams in the state have not one, two but three of their wrestlers pass the 100 win mark in a two week time frame?!" Hats off to our PEM fans for being there and showing their support to celebrate the moment. It's something Alex will never forget!"
PEM had an outstanding showing throughout the tournament, even the Rochester Post Bulletin reporters noticed the success of the Bulldog Wrestlers. The PB 's Alex VandenHouten commented in his Friday night edition how PEM had 6 in the semi-finals and the bright future of the program with not one senior on this year's roster.
Added Coach Bobby Bedsted, "I think we caught the Section by surprise on Friday! Cooper had a nice revenge win and Nolan Ford bumped off a returning state entrant from Stewarville. These kids had a great week of practice and were ready to roll on Friday!"
PEM had 10 total place and earned medals at the Section 1AA meet by earning a placing

Coach Cam Miller added, "it was a fun weekend for our guys. You always want one more. Carson Rahman had a heck of a season and came up one point short of a trip to St. Paul. He showed tremendous leadership and hard work that our team needed all year long. I can't wait to see him punch his ticket next year!"
PEM will have a send off to their state wrestlers on Thursday morning then it's off to compete at the Xcel.
