On Saturday Jan. 14, the PEM wrestling team hosted the annual PEM Invitational. This years event would feature 14 teams from MN and western WI. It was a solid day of wrestling for the Bulldogs, finishing first place with 199 total points, 35 points ahead of 2nd place Caledonia-Houston. Individual highlights for the Bulldogs included having 2 tournament champions, 4 runners-up, and 3 others that placed in the top 4.
Junior Carter Marx and Senior Austin Rother both took home individual championships, both going 3-0, at 152 and 170 pounds respectively. Garrett Olson(113), Nick Miller(120) Cael Marx(126), and Riley Wingert (220) all reached the finals with Olson, Marx, and Wingert having exceptional semifinal round victories to reach the finals. Olson was down 8-4 before coming back to post a 9-8 victory.
Marx defeated a 2017 WI state placewinner (currently ranked #5) by a score of 12-6. Wingert posted a 11-2 major decision over a very solid Winona opponent. At 285, Logan Wingert avenged his Tuesday night loss to W-K’s Ben Tentis with a 2nd period pin in the quarterfinal round, then nearly avenged his other loss Tuesday night in the semis to Caledonia’s #1 seed Brett Robley, before posting another fall in the 3rd place match.
Freshman Cooper Hofschulte and 8th grader Martin Prieto also won exciting quarterfinal matches to earn their spot in the top 4. Joe Stucky dropped his quarterfinal match vs. Eau Claire North’s Mason Phillips (the eventual Outstanding wrestler of the tournament), but won his next 3 matches to place 5th, going 4-1 on the day with 3 falls and 1 technical fall.
