PEM vs. Albert Lea
Last Thursday the PEM wrestlers traveled to Albert Lea High School to take part in a triangular with the Albert Lea Tigers and the Austin Packers. In the first dual of the night vs. the host Tigers, Albert Lea took charge early with two pins at 106 and 113, 2 forfeits at 120 and 126, followed by another pin at 132. The Bulldogs found themselves down 30-0 heading into 138, where Albert Lea’s #2 state ranked Cameron Davis was waiting. PEM senior Cooper Hofschulte was up to the challenge and made a great match of it, including scoring a takedown against Davis to tie the match at 4-4 late in the first period. In the end, Davis’ speed proved to be the deciding factor and despite a very impressive effort, Hofschulte would drop the match 10-6.
Senior, Garrett Olson finally got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at 145 with a second period pin. The pin generated some momentum for the Bulldogs as Cael Marx followed at 152 with a 5-0 decision victory. Then at 160, in an extremely dramatic finish, Kael Lamb scored a reversal with under :05 seconds remaining in the match to post a 5-4 decision victory. But Albert Lea captured the momentum right back at 170 with a tech fall from #4 ranked Caleb Talamantes. Then at 182, Albert Lea used come from behind headlock to score a pin in the closing seconds of the match giving the Tigers an insurmountable lead.
Despite being mathematically unable to catch the Tigers on the scoreboard, the Bulldog’s upper weights finished the meet strong. Starting with Martin Prieto at 195, who used 5 takedowns to build a lead before sealing a 3rd period pin. Continuing at 220 used a first period takedown and a 3rd period reversal to win a 6-1 decision. Finally at 285, junior Cody Schneider needed just :22 seconds to hit a knee tap that took his opponent straight to his back for the fall. The victory gave the Bulldogs six wins in the dual and close the margin of victory to 17 points.

But the Bulldogs would recapture the momentum with their 6 consecutive seniors in the middle weights.

PEM vs. St. Charles
One night later the Bulldogs were back at it, this time in their home gym to face the Saint Charles Saints for the 2nd time this season as well as the cross-county rival Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons.
In the first dual of the evening the Bulldogs faced off versus the Saints for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. Once again, junior Isaac Walch set the pace for the Bulldogs needed just :46 seconds to earn a takedown and a first period fall giving the home Bulldogs an early 6-0 lead in the dual. With the Saints being open at 113, 7th grader Aiden Graner earned the forfeit victory for PEM stretching the team score lead to 12-0. But the Saints would battle back, in the next 3 weight classes earning a 12-1 major decision at 120, a forfeit at 126, and a pin at 132 to take a 16-12 lead in the dual. But it was not to last as Cooper Hofschulte earned a forfeit victory at 138 and Garrett Olson followed with an :11 second pin at 145 to put the Bulldogs back in the driver’s seat with a 24-16 lead.
152 saw the most anticipated match-up of the evening when PEM’s (20-2) Cael Marx took on #9 state ranked Jett Thoreson. After both wrestlers traded 1 takedown and 2 escapes, the match was tied 4-4 in the 3rd period. Marx struck first at the 1 minute mark in the period with a single leg takedown, but Thoreson escaped quickly and the match came down to a final takedown once again. With Thoreson needing to be aggressive, Marx took advantage of an over-extended position and earned the final takedown of the match as the closing seconds ticked off for an 8-5 win.
The Bulldogs kept the momentum rolling at 160, with Kael Lamb earning a 13-4 victory behind the strength of 4 takedowns, including a 5 point “feet to back” scramble in the 2nd period. At 170, Dereck Boyum also used a feet to back scramble in the 2nd period, but Boyum made it stick and earned his team-leading 16th pin of the season. Due to Saints’ injuries, the next 2 weight classes saw the Bulldogs collect forfeit victories for Alex Rahman (182) and Martin Prieto (195). The Saints earned one more victory in the dual with a pin at 220, but 285 junior Cody Schneider got the points back with a forfeit victory in the final bout.
