Last Thursday, on the evening of Jan. 9, the PEM wrestlers traveled to St. Charles to wrestle a triangular featuring the Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton Wolves, and the St. Charles Saints.
The first dual pitted the Bulldogs against the FCLMC Wolves. The meet started out with an FCLMC pin at 113, giving the Wolves a brief 6-0 lead. But it was not to last long, as Garrett Olson would gather a PEM forfeit at 120 to tie the dual back up at 6-6. The next two weight classes featured the best two matches of the meet. First at 126, PEM sophomore Kael Lamb earned a 3-1 overtime victory over Cale Anderson, giving the Bulldogs a 9-6 lead in the meet. But twin brother and 2018 state entrant, Caden Anderson would get the 3 points back with a very close 3-2 victory over PEM’s Cooper Hofschulte, knotting up the team score at 9-9. The rest of the meet would be all black and gold however, as PEM picked up 1st period pins by Cael Marx (138), Joe Stucky (152), Riley Wingert (220), and Logan Wingert (285) as well as forfeit victories by Lafe Aarsvold (145), Carter Marx (160), Alex Rahman (170), and Martin Prieto (182).
In the 2nd dual of the evening, the Bulldogs brought their best effort to stop a very aggressive and young Saints squad. The Saints got on the board quickly with a decision and 106 and a pin at 113 giving them an early 9-6 lead in the meet. PEM Sophomore Garrett Olson got the momentum rolling for the Bulldogs with two arm-bars in the first period, the 2nd resulting in a pin, tightening up the score at 9-6 Saints. At 126, the Saints expanded the lead back to 6 with senior captain Tyler Mathison edging out PEM sophomore Kael Lamb in a 5-1 decision. Fellow PEM sophomores Cooper Hofschulte and Cael Marx would give the Bulldogs their first lead of the meet at 132 and 138 with back to back pins, first tying the meet at 12-12 and then giving the Bulldogs an 18-12 lead. St. Charles refused to go away quickly though, gaining a major decision victory at 145 to close the team score to 18-16. But PEM would create some breathing room in the next five weight classes beginning with Joe Stucky at 152 using just under a minute to pick up a quick pin that gave the Bulldogs a 24-16 edge. At 160, senior Carter Marx used 6 takedowns to pick up a 14-3 major decision victory which expanded the lead to 28-16. Senior Bulldogs Connor Jones, earned a forfeit and 6 more points for the Bulldogs at 170 to stretch the lead to 34-16. At 182, sophomore Alex Rahman put the dual on ice with a 3rd period pin, making a Saints comeback mathematically impossible. Not done yet, freshman Martin Prieto would receive a forfeit at 195 to tack 6 more points onto the Bulldogs score column. The Saints would prevail at 220 in a very hard fought 1 point victory, but closer Logan Wingert would finish for the Bulldogs with another first period pin.
