Graner, Hinrichs Win Section Titles - Punch Tickets to Xcel Energy Center
Blood, Sweat, and Tears. All of the hard work put into 4 months of wrestling, drilling, training, conditioning and lifting come down to 2 days! The scene is the Mayo Civic Center. One of the premier locations for state high school league events. Home of the most intense and grueling 2 days of a wrestlers season. Make it through and you punch your ticket to the Big Dance. Suffer a setback and your season can come to an end. Added PEM coach Nate Pfeilsticker, "that is what sums up Section 1 wrestling. These are 2 very long and tough days. The butterflies and nerves in everyone's stomach make it even worse. PEM showed up all weekend, wrestled with GRIT and we are happy with the results!"
In the end, the Dogs had 2 Section champions. Aiden Graner defeated #3 state ranked Owen Frederich of K-M in a 145 pound nail biter, 6-5. Alex Hinrichs at 215 earned his gold medal by defeating Jacob Duitsman, 8-4, in their section finals match. Commented PEM Head Coach, Steve Hinrichs. "Our 2 champions are peaking at the right time, Sections! We knew that Frederich would bring his A-game for this one and he did. Aiden did what he had to do to get the job done including a fantastic scramble to end the match and not give up the go-ahead takedown. Alex pulled 2 upsets to get here. As the #3 seed, he had to beat Veroeven of Waseca, who is state ranked in a semi-final thriller. Then had to beat the defending Section champion and state place-winner, Duitsman in the finals. Couldn't be prouder of these 2 and where they stood on the podium - ON TOP!"
PEM had outstanding performances from the rest of the team in a VERY tough and competitive section.

Added Coach Matiash, "Section 1AA has the #2 ranked team in Minnesota with K-M and the #8 ranked team in the state with Z-M. With each ranked team they bring many great individuals we have to contend with to get into the top 2 in the state. Plus Cannon Falls-Randolph who had 5 wrestlers make the state tournament. There's not a lot of room for error to try and get into the state tournament. Our guys showed up and gave it their all!"
PEM's state entrants will now head to the Xcel Energy Center starting on Friday. The state tournament schedule is on the MSHSL website. Aiden Graner has earned the #1 seed at the 145 AA weight class. Alex Hinrichs earned the #6 seed at the 215 AA weight class. Coach Wingert summarized the upcoming state tournament, "Aiden and Alex are wrestling at a very high level right now. They will find the best of the best at their weights on Friday and Saturday. I can't wait to see these 2 showcase their talents and show Minnesota what they have!"
