Last Friday, the PEM wrestlers traveled to Eyota to compete in a triangular featuring 2 Three Rivers Conference opponents, the Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) Wolves and the Dover-Eyota Eagles
.First up for PEM were the Wolves of FCLMC. Freshman Garrett Olson got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs. In his first action at 106, Olson pinned his FCLMC opponent in the 2nd period. At 113, senior Nick Miller followed up with a 1st period pin of his own. FCLMC would get on the board with a major decision at 120. The Bulldogs then cruised through the rest of the dual featuring pins by Cael Marx (132), Joe Stucky (145), and Dustin Dittrich (195), forfeit victories by Dereck Boyum (126), Cooper Hofschulte (132), Lafe Aarsvold (152), Alex Rahman (170), Austin Rother (182), Riley Wingert (220), and Logan Wingert (285), as well as a decision victory by Carter Marx (160).
In the 2nd dual of the evening vs. Dover-Eyota, the 1-2 punch of Garrett Olson and Nick Miller got the Bulldogs off to a 12-0 start again with a 1st period pin by Olson at 106 and a forfeit victory by Miller at 113. Dover-Eyota would get a fall at 120 to cut the PEM lead in half at 12-6. PEM would then collect 2 forfeit victories at 126 and 132 by freshmen Dereck Boyum and Cael Marx. Fellow freshman Cooper Hofschulte would follow up with a 2nd period pin at 138.
At 145, sophomore Joe Stucky kept the Bulldogs rolling. Tied at 0-0 as the first period was winding down, Stucky scored a critical takedown in the closing seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Then in the 2nd period Stucky would score a quick reversal and get the 2nd period pin. At 152 junior Carter Marx would also post a 2nd period pin. The Eagles would double their point total win a pin at 160. But the momentum was short-lived as senior Austin Rother got the Bulldogs restarted with a first period pin at 170.
At 182, was the feature match of the evening, pitting the Bulldogs returning state entrant Dustin Dittrich (currently ranked #9 in AA) vs. Dover-Eyota’s Mike Nelson (currently ranked #4 in class A). In the first period, Nelson proved why he has earned his #4 ranking getting the first takedown of the evening with a straight on double leg. Dittrich quickly responded with a reversal to tie the match at 2-2, but was unable to hold Nelson down and surrendered an escape to give Nelson the lead again at 3-2. With 50 seconds still left in the first period, Nelson fired in on another double leg, getting another takedown and taking a 5-2 lead. Again Dittrich countered with another reversal and was able to ride Nelson out for the remainder of the 1st period as the period ended with Nelson holding onto a 5-4 lead. Starting out the 2nd period Nelson chose the down position and scored a quick escape to stretch his lead to 6-4. Back on the feet Nelson again went back to his double leg attack, but this time Dittrich successfully defended two different attacks. Nelson then went to a single leg attack on Dittrich’s left leg, which Dittrich successfully defended for several seconds. Almost immediately after getting his left foot back on the ground, Dittrich went on the attack with a powerful fireman’s carry taking Nelson straight from his feet to his back. After a bit of a struggle Dittrich was able to get both of Nelson’s shoulder blades planted in the mat and capture the pin over the #4 ranked Eagle.
After trading forfeits at 195 and 220, there was only one match remaining in the dual the featured sophomore Logan Wingert. The first period of the heavyweight bout ended in a 0-0 tie, but Wingert stayed on the attack pushing the pace and gaining a critical stalling warning against his opponent. In the 2nd period, Wingert earned a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead and then continued pushing the tempo to gain another stalling warning which resulted in a 2-0 lead. In the final period, DE chose down and Wingert capitalized using a butcher to pry his exhausted opponent to his back and get the fall.
