In a short week before Christmas break, which became even shorter with the Blizzard of 2022, the PEM wrestling team took on Rochester JM and Stewartville in a southeastern Minnesota wrestling showcase at PEM high school on Dec. 20th. Many wrestlers and fans knew of the impending snow storm that was to hit the state on Wednesday, so many people were thankful a scheduled home triangular could be fit into the schedule before chaos and snowflakes erupted.
PEM started the evening facing the Rockets of JM. The young Bulldog grapplers found a way to put up 66 points with pins from 170 to Hwt to solidify the win. Alex Bedsted, Maeson Tradup and Drew Rahman completed the match with sound victories to help PEM pull away.
Commented coach Nate Pfeilsticker, "we were all crossing our fingers that we could at least get in our home triangular with the weather on our minds. Nice to see the Bulldogs wrestle tough with a 66-16 win."
The last part of the evening showcased not only the PEM-Stewartville rivalry but also gave Bulldog wrestlers to nominate their favorite teachers from years past. With a large crowd in attendance to honor teachers of wrestlers from K-12th grade, PA announcer Paul Aarsvold read aloud the many comments of thanks that PEM wrestlers had for the many teachers over the years. The 2022 Teacher Appreciation Night was a reunion of sorts for both teachers and wrestlers. After the match teachers made sure to take a few photos with their wrestlers who nominated them as stories were shared from classroom experiences over the years.
But wrestling still had to take place with the night of appreciation, and the Stewartville Tigers came ready to roll. PEM jumped out to a quick lead after pins by Carson Rahman and Aiden Graner. Unfortunately Stewartville was able to pull out some close wins in the middle weights and hold off a charge by PEM who gained wins by Alex Hinrichs, Alex Bedsted and Drew Rahman in the upper weights, and a gritty win by Logan Dittrich who bumped up to 145, to solidify an individual victory for the Bulldogs. Final score Stewartville 45 PEM 33.
Commented coach Bobby Bedsted, "our youth and inexperience showed up tonight. We had a few close matches get away from us and turned into pins for Stewie. We'll get back to work in the practice room and fix the mistakes."
PEM will travel over the holiday break to UW-Eau Claire on Thursday December 29th for their annual 16 team dual tournament which will feature top rated Simley and some tough teams and state ranked individuals from Wisconsin.
