Bulldog Wrestlers Split 4 Duals

Last week the Bulldog Wrestlers were able to host their first home event of the season. Though originally the Bulldogs were slated to travel to Harmony for a dual with FCLMC on Thursday, inclement weather prevented that event from happening. Through a series of unique circumstances, the meet was rescheduled for the following evening except in Plainview and with St. Charles joining to make it a triangular meet.

PEM vs. FCLMC

In the first dual of the evening, the 1-2 punch of junior Isaac Walch and 8th grader Carson Rahman got the Bulldogs out of the gate fast with 2 pins at 106 and 113, giving the Bulldogs an early 12-0 lead. Unfortunately, due to injuries and lack of experience in the lighter weights, the Bulldogs were forced to forfeit the next 3 weight classes. The 3 forfeits would temporarily give the lead back to FCLMC at 18-12. Then starting at 138 with Cooper Hofschulte, the Bulldog’s 6 seniors would right the ship and get PEM back on track in front of the home crowd. At 138 Hofschulte needed just :39 seconds to cement a pin and tie the meet at 18.

Senior Garrett Olson followed at 145 with an 8-2 victory over FCLMC’s best wrestler. At 152, senior Kael Lamb scored a first period pin stretching the Bulldog’s lead. Sophomore Garion Wallgren would step in to take a forfeit in the middle of the senior run at 160. Then back to 3 more seniors: Cael Marx at 170, Dereck Boyum at 182, and Alex Rahman at 195. Marx and Boyum would both need less than a period to get pins, while Rahman ground out a 9-1 major decision. In the final two weight classes of the meet, Martin Prieto and Cody Schneider both received forfeits to score 12 more points for the Bulldogs.

PEM vs. St. Charles

In PEM’s 2nd meet of the evening Isaac Walch again got the home team on track needing just under a minute to score the pin and get the Bulldogs on the board. Nolan Pfeilsticker (8th), jumped into the line-up at 113 and took a forfeit making the score 12-0 PEM. But St. Charles would answer back with a pin at 120 and they collected 12 more points at 126 and 132 where the Bulldogs were open. Cooper Hofschulte again played the role of momentum changer at 138 with a 16-3 major decision rout, pulling PEM back within 2.

At 145, Garrett Olson received a forfeit giving the Bulldogs the lead back for a moment. But at 152 the Saints would score a victory by fall and retake the lead yet again. Then at 160, the Bulldogs would take back the momentum of the meet for good. Starting with Cael Marx going feet to back for a first period pin. Not to be outdone, Dereck Boyum got a first period pin of his own at 170. In the next three weight classes (182, 195, and 220), the Bulldogs would receive 3 forfeits due to St. Charles injuries. The final match of the evening at 285 also proved to be the closest as well. Junior Tony Roberton used two single leg takedowns in the 3rd period to finish with a 6-2 decision victory.

PEM vs. Byron

The following morning the Bulldogs headed to Byron for a midday triangular with the Byron Bears and host Chatfield Gophers. The Bulldog’s first dual of the morning pitted them against the Bears. At 106, Isaac Walch got the day started for the Bulldogs collecting his 9th pin of the season and giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead on the scoreboard. But the Bears would answer back in a BIG way in the next 5 weight classes. First at 113 the Bears would score a 3rd period pin. Then PEM forfeits at 120, 126, and 132 would add 18 more. Then at 138, in a battle of unbeaten wrestlers, former state champion Maxwell Petersen would best senior Cooper Hofschulte in a 16-6 major decision, giving the Bears a commanding 28-6 lead in the dual.

But the Bulldogs would claw their way back into the meet beginning at 145 with Garrett Olson getting a 1st period pin and doubling the PEM point total to 12. At 152, Kael Lamb would get a payback win over Byron’s Parker Kline. Lamb lost to Kline on a last second takedown in the dual last season, but it was not to be in this dual as Lamb scored 3 takedowns enroute to a 9-6 decision victory. The PEM win brought the team score a little bit closer at 28-15 with Byron still leading. Cael Marx brought the score closer yet (28-21) after a first period pin at 160.

At 170, Dereck Boyum got into a wild finish in his match. With the match tied 1-1 late in the 3rd period and both wrestlers in the neutral position, Boyum gave up what looked to be the match winning takedown in the final :20 seconds. But Boyum continued to scramble and reversed his opponent to his back for 5 points and a 6-3 decision. The win would put the Bulldogs within striking distance of completing the comeback (28-24).

Alex Rahman would complete the comeback and give PEM the lead back at 182. After scoring 1 takedown in each of the first 2 periods, Rahman use a double leg straight to back points to get the 3rd period pin and put the Bulldogs on top by 2 (30-28). Junior Martin Prieto would add even more to the total with a 19-7 major decision at 195, giving the Bulldogs their 6th consecutive win. Unfortunately for PEM, the Bears responded at 220 and 285 with back to back pins giving Byron the dual meet victory.

PEM vs. Chatfield

In the week’s final dual, PEM ran into a buzzsaw in the Chatfield Gophers. The Gophers started out winning a very close match at 106, and then ran the table in the next four weight classes, giving them a 27-0 lead heading into 138. In a role that has become familiar, professional stopper Cooper Hofschulte stopped the bleeding for the Bulldogs and got on the board with a hard-fought 9-3 victory at 138. Wrestler of the week, Garrett Olson kept the ball rolling with a 1st period arm-bar pin at 145. Kael Lamb put the Bulldogs in double-digits at 152. After wearing down his opponent with 3 first period takedowns, Lamb only needed 1 takedown in the 2nd period to convert a pinning combination and get the fall. Then at 160, in another hard fought battle between 1 loss wrestlers, Cael Marx scored a 3rd period single leg takedown to take a 4-2 lead and held on to win 4-3. The win at 160 put the Bulldogs within 9, but that was as close as it would get.

At 170, Chatfield’s best wrestler at multiple time state placewinner Seth Goetzinger would get a 2nd period pin, and Chatfield would follow with a pin at 182 as well. The final win for the Bulldogs would come at 195 with Martin Prieto earning a 21-6 technical fall on the strength of 7 takedowns and 2 sets of nearfall points. Chatfield would earn pins in the final two weight classes of the meet and complete the dual meet victory.
