Friday January 6th saw the Bulldog Wrestling team back in action for the first time since Christmas break. It was Parent’s Night and the Bulldogs were competing in the home gym for the first time at home in over month. It turned out to be a very exciting night with wrestlers of all ages from Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) and Goodhue competing in front of a full gymnasium of spectators. The first varsity meet of the night saw PEM competing against the Wolves of FCLMC. FCLMC has a very young team and is in the process of rebuilding, which lead to them filling only 6 of the 14 weight classes. Due to forfeits, the team score got very lopsided, but the 6 varsity wrestlers FCLMC brought were quality wrestlers that showed a lot of heart and determination. Highlights for the Bulldogs included a pin to start off the dual at 106 in a battle of two 8th graders. At 113, junior Nick Miller defeated gritty senior Treyton Chiglo by a major decision score of 11-1. At 152, sophomore Carter Marx defeated senior Eric Kunz by a technical fall score of 21-6. At 220, PEM senior Jacob Clark earned a hard-fought 5-1 victory over FCLMC’s Walker Ward, a wrestler who had defeated him last season. According to Coach Marx, “it was easy to be pleased with the way we competed in the matches that were wrestled against the wolves. FCLMC deserves a lot of respect for the way that they came to compete in every single match.”

The middle dual saw the Goodhue Wildcats defeat FCLMC by a score of 63-12. Then the final, and most anticipated dual of the evening between PEM and Goodhue concluded the evening. The strength of the Bulldogs lighter weights got the Bulldogs out to a very strong start, winning the first 7 matches in a row. At 106, Cael Marx could not get the pin, but a late takedown sealed the technical fall by a score of 16-1. At 113, PEM’s Nick Miller set the tone for the rest of the dual meet with his non-stop attack of #10 ranked John Altendorf, earning a 14-2 major decision. Using a barrage of arm bars, 8th grader Garrett Olson kept the train rolling with another technical fall, this time by a score of 15-0. At 126 for the first time this season, #2 ranked senior Reed Defrang extended his winning streak by earning a 1st period pin. Back on the mat for the first time since opening night, freshman Joe Stucky earned a very solid 7-4 decision against scrappy sophomore Travis Gadient. At 138, PEM senior Grant Rubin defeated Goodhue’s Sven Otterness in dramatic fashion. After giving up two takedowns in the first period, Rubin got a takedown of his own in the second period, then secured an arm-bar on the right side and walked it around the head for the pin. At 145, sophomore Carter Marx secured the 7th Bulldog victory in a row by a score of 3-1. The Wildcats then battled back on the scoreboard with the heart of their order that includes 3 wrestlers ranked in the top 3 in their wt class in MN. At 152, PEM’s Connor Jones was defeated by #3 ranked Kaleb O’Reilly. At 160, PEM sophomore Dustin Dittrich went toe to toe with Goodhue’s #1 ranked Kelby O’Reilly. This was a very entertaining match that included 1 Dittrich takedown and 2 near misses, but in the end O’Reilly was able to notch the 9-3 decision. At 170, PEM’s Austin Rother used a cradle to pin Garrett Huneke. Senior, Frank Wingert kept the ball rolling for the Bulldogs on the strength of 3 single leg takedowns to defeat Mason Huemann by a score of 7-3. At 195, PEM senior Jacob Clark battled hard against returning state champion Bailee O’Reilly, falling in a 13-5 major decision. At 220, PEM freshman, Riley Wingert had Goodhue senior Ryan Schoenfelder on his back in the first period, nearly getting the pin. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Schoenfelder recovered and pinned Wingert in the 3rd period. Closing out the evening was PEM freshman Logan Wingert earning a 1st period pin to seal the dual meet for the Bulldogs. According to Coach Marx, “What a great night of wrestling action for all of our youth, JV, and varsity wrestlers. I was very pleased with how our varsity wrestlers competed, especially in the 113, 138, 170, and 182 weight classes where we defeated very high quality opponents.”
