After completing the Friday night dual meet victory over LARP, the Bulldog wrestlers had a quick turnaround and 9 hours later boarded the bus for Cannon Falls to take on two Section 1AA opponents Stewartville and Cannon Falls, as well as the defending Class A State Champions, Kenyon Wanamingo.
PEM Bullogs cage Stewartville Tigers
First up for the Bulldogs were the Stewartville Tigers. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start getting a technical fall and two first period pins to gain a 17-0 advantage. Stewartville got on the board with a major decision to make the score 17-4, but the Bulldogs answered back with a fall by Reed DeFrang (132), a major decision by Lafe Aarsvold (138), and a technical fall by Carter Marx (145) to give the Bulldogs a commanding 32-4 advantage. At 152, Stewartville senior, and University of Upper Iowa commit, Tanner Prochaska got the Tigers rolling again, but Connor Jones was able to limit the bonus points to a major decision. At 160, the Bulldogs got back on track with an 8-0 win from Dustin Dittrich followed by a 3rd period pin from Austin Rother and another 11-3 major decision from Frank Wingert. PEM Bulldogs fall to Defending Champs KW Knights
The second dual of the day pitted the Bulldogs against the defending State Champion Kenyon Wanamingo Knights, currently ranked #5 in class A. They also brought a line-up that featured 8 wrestlers currently ranked in the top 10 in their weight class in the state of MN. Highlights for the Bulldogs included, a pin by Cael Marx at 106 to begin the dual meet, a 6-2 decision victory for Reed DeFrang over the #6 ranked Seth Brossard, a 5-2 decision victory for Carter Marx at 145, a fall for Frank Wingert at 182, and an impressive 3-0 victory for Jacob Clark at 220 over #7 ranked Kaya Lindell to solidify his bid as one of the top upper weights in SE MN. The Bulldogs also received competitive efforts from many others, but in the end, KW proved to have a little more than the Bulldogs could match on this day. Coach Marx commented, “this dual meet will be very valuable as we work on refining our skills and improving our mistakes as we march the Section Tournament. K-W exposed a lot of areas on the mat where we can improve.”

PEM Bulldogs finish day with solid win over Cannon Falls Bombers
In the final dual meet of the day, PEM took on the host Cannon Falls Bombers. Traditionally, quite dangerous, Cannon Falls is in a bit of a down year with injuries and low numbers which unfortunately meant 7 open weight classes. While the outcome of the dual meet was never going to be in question, the individuals that wrestled for CF were very solid and provided for some of the most exciting matches of the day. At 106, Cael Marx found himself on his back early and down by a couple points, but battled back for an 8-2 victory, the next match of the afternoon at 120 found Garret Olson down early as well by as many as 6 points only to battle back to get a pin in the 2nd period. The next actual match happened at 138, where Lafe Aarsvold, down 8-0 almost pulled off an improbable pin when he hit CF’s Peter Fitterer in a high flyer and put him on his back. Fitterer would fight off his back and maintain a 9-4 victory, for the Bomber’s only victory on the day. The next match at 145 would prove to be the closest match of the dual meet and the day as well. PEM’s Carter Marx and Cannon Falls’ senior Gavin Gates finished regulation with a tie score of 1-1. In the first overtime period, neither wrestler was able to score a takedown, so the match proceeded to the 2nd and 3rd overtime period where again, both wrestlers scored their escape to keep the score tied, only now at 2-2. In the 4th and final overtime period, Gates was able to take Marx out of bounds on 2 separate stand-up attempts. The match came back to the middle with a mere 9 seconds remaining, Marx got to his feet one more time and this time was able to stay in bounds and create the separation needed to get the 1 point escape, and after 8 and a half minutes of wrestling, get the 3-2 victory. At 152, sophomore Connor Jones got a first period pin to keep the momentum on the PEM side. At 160, a highly anticipated rematch of Dustin Dittrich and #5 ranked Hayden Strain took centerstage. Showing off his high level of balance, and winning some key scramble positions allowed the PEM sophomore to defeat the highly ranked Bomber for the 2nd week in a row, this time by a score of 8-3. In the final bout of the day at 195, PEM freshman Riley Wingert only needed :25 to pin his CF opponent. Over the course of the dual meet, forfeits were also picked up by Nick Miller (113), Joe Stucky (126), Reed DeFrang (132), Austin Rother (170), Frank Wingert (182), Jacob Clark (220), and Logan Wingert (285). Coach Marx commented, “this was a very good way to end the day, it was unfortunate that we only had 7 actual matches, but 5 of the 7 were very competitive and will continue to help us improve.”
