Bulldog Wrestlers defeat GMLOS to close regular season, finish 9-0 in TRC

On Thursday, Feb. 9, the PEM wrestlers traveled to a visiting school for the last time this season. The brand new Grand Meadow gymnasium was an impressive venue, and the Bulldogs were up to the challenge. Starting at 106, 8th grader Cael Marx got PEM started with a 9-1 victory over GMLOS #10 ranked Jackson Hale. Junior, Nick Miller (113) used an early takedown to take the lead and survived a late surge to defeat Chris Romero, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. At 120, PEM 8th grader Garrett Olson wrestled well in dropping a 6-2 decision to GMLOS rising star Daniel Smith. At 126, PEM freshman Joe Stucky combined smooth takedowns with a series of cradles to win a 13-3 major decision. At 132, PEM senior Reed DeFrang continued his winning ways picking up a first period fall and stretching the PEM lead to 17-3. GMLOS would hit their stride in the next three weight classes, picking up a pin and two wins by decision to close the gap to 17-15. PEM sophomore Dustin Dittrich would get the Bulldogs rolling again at 160, with a 2nd period pin. Then at 170, Austin Rother nailed down a first period pin, to increase the PEM lead to 14 points. At 182, Frank Wingert received a forfeit, since his opponent had suffered an injury earlier in the week, bringing the PEM lead to an insurmountable 20 points. In the 195 weight class, #1 ranked Chris Bain of GMLOS earned a major decision over PEM’s Jacob Clark, followed up by another GMLOS pin at 220. GMLOS was open at 285 so, Logan Wingert earned a forfeit victory, making the final score PEM 41 GMLOS 25. With that victory, PEM concludes their regular season with a 14-2 overall record, and for the 2nd straight year were the champions of the Three Rivers Conference with a conference record of 8-0. Coach Marx commented, “I’m very proud of the way every individual was able to improve and raise the level of their performance throughout this regular season. I’m excited to see all of them perform in the post-season.” The Bulldog wrestlers will next be in action on Thursday night, in the first round of the Section 1AA team tournament. The Bulldogs have earned the #3 seed and will host #6 LARP beginning at 7:00 in the PEM high school gymnasium. With a win on Thursday, the Bulldogs will have the opportunity to compete in the Section semifinals at 11:00 am on Saturday morning at the Mayo Civic Center Arena.
