Bulldog Wrestlers begin dual season 2-0 with wins against Byron and #4 ranked Kenyon-Wanamingo

PEM pin Bears 57-22

On Thursday, December 8, the PEM wrestling team traveled to Kenyon to compete in a triangular with the Bears of Byron and the host Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights. The first dual of the evening featured the Bulldogs against fellow Section 1AA rival Byron. The meet started with the most exciting bout of the dual at 106. PEM freshman Carter Meyers got the evening started in dramatic fashion. After being down by as many as 7 points, Meyers posted a takedown at the end of the 2nd period. Going into the 3rd period down by 5, Meyers scored a reversal and 3 nearfall points tying up the match at 10-10 as regulation time expired. In the overtime period, Meyers stopped a shot and scored the takedown to earn the sudden death victory and got the Bulldogs on the board with his first ever varsity win. Seizing the momentum, the Bulldogs went on to win 11 of the 14 bouts against the Bears. Other PEM highlights included pins from 120-Nick Miller(12), 126-Cael Marx(9), 138-Cooper Hofschulte(9), 145-Joe Stucky(10), 160-Carter Marx(11), 182-Austin Rother(12), 195-Dustin Dittrich(11), and 220-Riley Wingert(10)

Bulldogs battle Knights to 51-24 victory

The 2nd meet of the evening featured the Bulldogs against the #4 ranked Class A, Knights of Kenyon-Wanamingo. Last season, the Knights finished as the 5th place team at the MN State Tournament, and also accounted for 1 of the Bulldogs’ 3 losses last season. On this night however, K-W was left vulnerable by a couple of unfortunate injuries to key performers. Nevertheless, the K-W lineup featured many experienced wrestlers and the Bulldogs were up to the challenge.

After the team fell in a 6-0 hole, freshman Garrett Olson got the Bulldogs rolling with a first period pin at 113, tying the score at 6-6. 120 featured K-W’s 2x state champ Jeron Matson, and since PEM had to give a forfeit somewhere due to injury at 138, the Bulldogs gave it to Matson and then slid their next 3 wrestlers up a weight class. Bumping up to 126, senior Nick Miller wasted no time getting a first period pin and tying the meet up again at 12-12. Sliding up to 132, freshman Cael Marx battled his larger opponent to a 6-2 victory, giving PEM their first lead and one they would not relinquish.

Fellow freshman Cooper Hofschulte kept the momentum rolling earning a very hard fought 4-1 victory over a larger and more experienced opponent at 138. Sophomore Joe Stucky totally overwhelmed his opponent getting a 1st period pin at 145. After losing by fall at 152, the Bulldogs sent freshman Alex Rahman to pick up a forfeit at 160 and get those 6 points back. Junior, 160 Carter Marx then bumped up to 170 and posted a 2nd period pin against his senior opponent. At 182, senior Austin Rother used all 3 periods to pin his K-W opponent, and in doing so put the Bulldogs up 42-18 leaving K-W mathematically unable to catch up even though their final 3 wrestlers were all ranked in the top 10 in MN in class A.

195 featured the premier bout of the evening featuring PEM junior Dustin Dittrich (ranked #10 in AA) versus K-W’s Logan Quam (ranked #5 in class A). The match featured many exciting scrambles and both combatants were near exhaustion when it was finished, with Dittrich prevailing 6-4. Not to be outdone at 220, unranked PEM sophomore Riley Wingert took one big scramble to plant his #7 ranked K-W opponent on his back, and recorded the pin with 5 seconds remaining in the 1st period. On the evening,

Coach Marx commented, “I was very proud of the style that our team utilized tonight against two very well coached opponents. We need to continue to set the tempo and pace of matches, being the aggressors no matter who we’re facing.”
